Vittorio Bertazzoni established the brand name of SMEG in 1948, originally naming the brand Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla (Italian for ‘metal enamelling factory’). The company was based in Guastalla, Reggio Emilia, a small village in Italy. The Bertazzoni family still privately owns SMEG, and Roberto Bertazzoni is the chairman and CEO. The company headquarters remain in Guastalla.

SMEG is most well known for the 1950s-style ‘retro’ range of refrigerators. This ‘FAB’ range features curved corners and comes in a variety of unusual colours, such as pink, lime green, and pale blue, and patterns such as striped or ‘union jack’. The ‘FAB’ range was later extended to include dishwashers, washing machines and gas fires. More recently the range has been expanded to include induction hobs, integrated washing machines, and washer dryers. Other popular products that have proved a success for SMEG include the ‘Opera’ freestanding range cookers. Within the industry of domestic appliance production, SMEG is a market leader in innovative style and design, proving that aesthetics need not suffer in functional products.
